“For every thousand hacking at the leaves… there is one striking at the root.” Thoreau
A common understanding and rationale for engagement has been a source of debate in HR and executive circles for years. While everyone agrees that an engaged workforce is beneficial, all of the insights and leadership efforts haven’t moved the dial much. We continue to be bombarded by the tyranny of the urgency. We keep pushing people to do more with less. People keep expecting their bosses to do a better job. And employee engagement surveys continue to show that we are not reaching our potential in this area. At the same time, in the midst of a changing and challenging Alberta economy, the added responsibility of building a culture that engages talent can be daunting.
To make the shift from rhetoric to realty, you have to get to an entirely different understanding and application of engagement. To paraphrase Thoreau: if we are going to make an impact, we have to quit hacking at the leaves of surveys and programs and get to work on the root, the fundamental way we approach engagement. If you don’t, it becomes just another organizational pipedream and source of frustration.
Take this opportunity to step back from the fray and be inspired by David Irvine, one of Canada’s most respected voices on leadership and organizational culture.
•Be inspired with a renewed view on employee engagement that will move engagement from rhetoric to reality.
• Understand the relationship between engagement and accountability in an age of entitlement.
• Learn the three fundamental accountabilities of every leader that will ensure employee engagement.
• Leave with practical insights and strategies for engaging the talent in your organization.
